The Cowlitz River stands as one of the most productive and heavily fished rivers in the state of Washington. Originating on the south side of Mount Rainier, the river begins as cold mountain runoff before flowing into Riffe Lake. From there, it continues downstream into Mayfield Lake, where Mayfield Dam regulates flows. After passing the dam, the Cowlitz winds through fertile farm country before finally joining the Columbia River near the town of Longview. Because of this long and varied course, the Cowlitz supports an incredible diversity of fish and fishing opportunities.

Without question, the Cowlitz remains Washington’s most popular river. For more than two decades, it has consistently produced the highest number of both winter and summer steelhead caught by anglers each season. As a result, anglers from across the region flock to this river year-round. Additionally, the Cowlitz supports some of the largest hatchery steelhead runs in the state, which contributes to its reputation as a dependable producer.
Beyond steelhead, the Cowlitz also hosts strong runs of spring Chinook, fall Chinook, fall coho, and coastal cutthroat trout. Consequently, anglers can target different species across multiple seasons without ever leaving the river. This diversity makes the Cowlitz a destination fishery for both experienced anglers and newcomers alike.
Without question, the Cowlitz River remains Washington’s most popular river.
During the summer, we spend most of our time on the Cowlitz targeting summer steelhead and fall salmon throughout June, July, August and September. At that time of year, fish stack in predictable holding water, which allows for consistent success when conditions align. Moreover, stable flows and controlled water releases often create ideal fishing conditions compared to free-flowing coastal rivers.
Because of the river’s size and current, effective access becomes essential. Therefore, the best way to fish the Cowlitz involves using high-quality jet boats. We rely on custom heated 25-foot Alumaweld Super Vee boats, which provide comfort, stability, and safety. These boats also allow us to cover water efficiently while maintaining precise boat control in heavy current.
Ultimately, the Cowlitz River offers unmatched opportunity in Washington. Its consistent fish returns, long seasons, and excellent access combine to create a fishery unlike any other. Because I guide this river regularly, I tailor each trip to current conditions and angler goals, ensuring productive days on one of the Northwest’s most iconic rivers.
