Plug Fishing

Plug Fishing: Why Extreme Cleanliness and Precision Catch More Fish!

When it comes to Plug fishing for salmon and steelhead, most anglers focus on depth, speed, and location. However, after decades of guiding on Western Washington rivers, I have learned that success often comes down to details many anglers overlook. Specifically, cleanliness and precise Plug tuning consistently separate average days from exceptional ones.

Over the years, people have laughed when they see me clean my Plugs with regular Crest toothpaste. Nevertheless, results speak louder than opinions. I firmly believe that maintaining an extremely clean Plug, leader, and even main line directly affects how fish respond. Fish constantly release pheromones, especially when they feel stressed or threatened. Therefore, when you hook a fish, that scent transfers into the slime and then onto your line and Plug. Consequently, the next fish encounters that warning signal long before it ever sees the lure.

Because of this, I change leaders frequently when I catch fish consistently. However, leader changes alone do not go far enough. Every Plug that comes out of the water gets cleaned immediately. First, I scrub it with a small round brush and grease-cutting soap like Dawn or lemon-scented Joy. Then, I let it dry completely before reuse. This process removes oils, residue, and unwanted odors absorbed during the drift.

When plug fishing, new plugs outperformed used ones nearly three to one.

Before the Plug ever goes back into the river, I take one more step that surprises many anglers. I clean it again using regular-flavor Crest toothpaste. The mild abrasive removes embedded residue while leaving no lingering scent. Importantly, only the standard flavor works. In fact, every time I experimented with wintergreen or other varieties, my catch rates dropped noticeably. Once I returned to regular Crest, success immediately improved.

Years ago, I confirmed this theory by fishing brand-new Plugs straight out of the package for an entire season. Consistently, new Plugs outperformed used ones nearly three to one. Plastic absorbs odors, and once those smells settle into the material, fish notice. Therefore, extreme cleanliness helps older Plugs perform more like new ones.

Additionally, Plug tuning matters just as much as scent control. Screw-eye Plugs often run differently due to minor manufacturing variations. Because of that, I measure and adjust every new Plug to match proven producers. I even modify pliers to set screw-eyes at precise angles for consistent action.Ultimately, Plug fishing success depends on discipline. Cleanliness, scent management, and precise tuning require effort. However, because salmon and steelhead rely heavily on smell and vibration, these steps dramatically increase hookups. If you want to fish more effectively, treat every Plug like it matters—because it absolutely does
